How Is Health & Wellness Coaching Different Than Therapy?

Health and wellness coaching and mental health therapy serve different purposes and may complement one another. Health and wellness coaching focuses on present-to-future behavior change, goal setting, and structured action planning. It helps individuals who are generally mentally stable build routines, strengthen accountability, and implement lifestyle changes that support wellbeing.

 

Mental health therapy, in contrast, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions and addressing psychological symptoms, emotional concerns, and past trauma. Therapy provides clinical treatment and therapeutic interventions, while health coaching supports behavior change and goal implementation.

What Happens During a Health & Wellness Coaching Session?

An NBHWC-certified health and wellness coaching session is a client-centered, confidential partnership lasting 30–60 minutes. Sessions are focused on sustainable behavior change and improving health outcomes, not providing direct medical advice or prescriptive treatment.

 

Your coach uses active listening, evidence-based communication

strategies, and motivational interviewing to support you in:

 

Clarifying meaningful health goals

Identifying barriers and underlying patterns

Strengthening motivation and self-efficacy

Developing realistic, measurable action plans​

Health & Wellness Coaching is offered in both individual sessions

and groups such as The Follow Through Community

 

Sessions are structured yet collaborative, allowing you to take an active role in your care.

 

Do You Accept Insurance?

While we cannot guarantee coverage, HSA and FSA reimbursement may be available with a provider referral indicating medical necessity. A superbill can also be provided for submission to your insurance provider, and many clients have successfully used this for reimbursement.
